Staying safe when shopping online

Staying safe when shopping online

Online shopping is super convenient - especially when you can do it in your pyjamas (Organic of course). Unfortunately, scammers are getting sneakier, and it’s easy to get caught off guard.

We want to help you shop safely and confidently. So we’ve put together a few simple, no-nonsense tips to help you steer clear of online scams. We’ve also included a link for some helpful information from the ACCC ScamWatch website.

If it looks too good to be true...

It probably is. Be wary of websites and social media advertising huge discounts or big-name items at super low prices. It’s often a trap.

Does their site have a solid history, Terms and Conditions a Privacy Policy, and an ABN number? If not, beware.

Stick with websites you know

If you haven’t heard of a store before, take a minute to look it up. Trusted retailers usually have a solid reputation, clear contact info, and Google reviews from other shoppers. Australian retailers will also have an ABN so you can verify they are legitimate.

Keep an eye on your accounts

Regularly check your banking app or statements to ensure your transactions are correct.

Double-check those emails

Scammers often masquerade as popular retailers or trusted companies. Check email addresses carefully (click on the sender’s name to see the e-mail address) and never click on suspicious links. If in any doubt, contact the company directly, by a separate phone call or e-mail.

Watch out for fake order confirmations

Getting a “Thank you for your order” email when you didn’t buy anything? That’s a common scam. Don’t panic - delete it and don’t click anything inside.
