About Organature Australia

The Founders of Organature

Organature was founded by Peter and Maureen Byl in 2004. They had previously worked for many years in a family business, manufacturing, wholesaling and retailing bed linen, bedding and curtains.

In 1993 Peter was diagnosed with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. Testing showed the predominant cause of his illness to be the out-gassing of chemicals from the fabric used in the workplace and the overall work environment.

There is no total cure for this strange ailment which can strike anyone at any time; many people are already allergic to perfumes, detergents, soap powders and deodorants, due to the chemicals they contain! To-date the only recognised remedy and precaution is ‘Avoidance of Chemicals’. This is not only to the chemicals to which you are known to be affected, but also to other chemicals as these can cause the ‘domino’ effect.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity can happen to anyone. Because you need your rest without the effects of chemicals, it is most important to avoid formaldehyde treated bedlinen and the other chemicals, such as Phenol, which they contain. Conventional cotton sheets often contain formaldehyde to make them ‘Non-iron’, ‘Easy care’, ‘Wrinkle free’, ‘ Permanently pressed’, ‘Flame proof’ and many other fancy names.

Due to Peter’s ill health, the family business closed. As a consequence Peter and Maureen have made massive changes to their lifestyle and to their home environment – all for the better. Improvements in Peter’s health, due to these changes, combined with past knowledge and experience, enabled him to produce this exclusive range of organic cotton bedroom, bathroom and baby nursery products, and to help, not only those who have chemical sensitivities and allergies, but many others seeking a healthier lifestyle. Thus Organature was born.

Organature Products

The ‘Certified Organic’ textiles industry in Australia really began in earnest when Organature commenced the manufacture and supply of organic and chemical free mattresses, bedding and bedlinen for babies, children and adults alike.

All of the fabrics, fillings, bedding, bed linen, towelling, manchester and clothing in the Organature range, are made from exclusive pure Organic Cotton, grown by non-toxic methods and using only that water which falls directly from the sky – pure fresh rainwater! This makes them even more highly sought after by those who care for the future health of our children, the environment and our planet.

To minimise Peter’s exposure to the harmful chemicals that were making him sick, we searched for ‘CERTIFIED’ organic cotton products for the bedroom and a company in the Netherlands, able to supply rolls of certified organic cotton fabrics, was located. Importing the fabrics to make the products in Australia was the most economical and viable option. Raw cotton, including the cotton filling in imported toys, quilts, mattress protectors and pillows is mandated to be fumigated when it arrives in Australia; that is another harmful chemical.

Our fabrics and fillings are NOT fumigated and we do NOT use fire retardants.

Organature bedlinen products are packed in cellophane (a product made from tree cellulose), NOT plastic or plastic that looks like cellophane. Quilts pillows and mattresses are packed in bags made from our organic cotton fabric, ideal to be used for storage. Organic cotton and cellophane are natural materials, they are bio-degradable, and when used or worn out, can go into your compost.

Due to our experience and the way we control all aspects of the fabrics we have woven for us, the products we manufacture ourselves and those we have made especially for us, we can now offer YOU the BEST in Organic quality, clean production and price … without contamination from outside sources.

We hope our products will improve the quality of your life, just like they improved ours.

Our Fabrics

We have decided it’s best to import our own organic fabrics which unfortunately cannot be made in Australia as there is no equipment to produce these fine yarns or weave the better quality fabrics that we use for our linen and other bedding.

To keep the carbon footprints at its lowest, we import from our closest associate, India. India also has a much better climate that Australia for growing cotton naturally without the use of irrigated water. The most recent monsoon season in India produced the highest cotton yields of any country in the world (as reported by Landline ABC October 2019). Our organic cotton mattresses, quilts and pillows are the only ones made in Australia which are filled with pure Organic Cotton. These products are manufactured under contract to our clean and organic specifications from the materials we supply. Most of our 100% Organic Cotton towels are made for us in India, however we are now able to make some of our own with imported terry toweling fabric sourced from certified mills that we have personally visited, to ensure that our high standards for cleanliness and organic purity with no chance of chemical contamination, are adhered to.

All organic bedlinen and other bedding products are Made in Australia in our own sewing rooms under strict clean conditions; the walls are painted with natural organic paint, the cutting table is Australian hardwood, we do not use chipboard or MDF, we are a family business and none of us use chemical fragrances, personal care products or perfumes.

We follow the highest international certification standard certification standard but go even a step further. the highest international certification standard allow a maximum of 5% of an additive/addition as long as it is not harmful. We try to avoid any chemicals, even those which are tested to be safe, if not essential. For instance, we do not permit the chemicals OB, Optical Brightener in our fabrics; we don't think they are necessary. Many shops have these Optically Brightened textile products on their shelves to attract customers to the ultra-white look. While permitted to be used under organic certification standards, Organic Cotton bed linen which contains these chemicals is often imported and sold in Australia by other retailers, but WE WILL NOT USE OPTICAL BRIGHTENERS! We consider our health and yours, to be more important.

We're thoughtful about how we treat, store and manufacture all our products. We care about your health and the health of our planet.

Our Staff

Business grew steadily in the first few years. We advertised in several organically inspired magazines and very much appreciated the positive feedback they generated. With the assistance of friends and family we set up stalls at trade shows and were blown away by the positive response yet again.

Orders increased, requests for new products multiplied and our Organature range grew from basic sheets and doona covers into organic cotton filled quilts, bath robes and clothing.

At this stage, we needed more permanent help to expand the business further while at the same time fulfill our desire to deliver personal service and give experienced advice when asked, yet maintain our high standards to supply a quality product.

In a well timed move, several family members were inspired to join the business and thankfully, we have never looked back. This of course brought with it more capabilities to add yet another highly sought-after product to our range – Australian Hardwood Furniture.

After a few years, we had a need to expand further, and with a few team members leaving to move interstate, we also found the need to employ new staff and to find a new location which could hold our expansion. The opportunity arose to move closer to Melbourne where not only could we house the large cutting table for our wide width fabric for cutting sheets, but also we could have a shop front. Such an exciting step for us. We employed some local staff members, and quickly become a new knowledgeable team, who each brings their own story.

The New Shop

Growth always brings new challenges, and we certainly did our share of soul searching. Should we sell (that would be a bit like selling your baby), should we close (unthinkable), or should we re-fresh, re-furbish, re-generate, re-locate. So that is what we did.

In March 2015, with support and encouragement from our daughter Genevieve, who is by now managing most areas of the business, we located to new premises in San Remo (near Philip Island), sought out new team members – a wonderful group of philosophy sharing souls who are also eager to improve their own health and life-style while considering and caring for others.

In March 2019 we made another move to a shop with better storage facilities, just down the road in Newhaven. In fact, our fabrics are now stored in a beautiful, clean and spacious area just out the back. So the venture continues, enjoying, expanding, and always searching for more knowledge and better ways to live organically, improve our existing products and increase our level of service.

Assembly Instructions

Airley, Apollo, Barossa, Canterbury, Daintree, Daysleford, Hawthorn, Kingston, Kimberley, Mansfield, Windsor and Trundles

Congratulations on purchasing your Organature Bed!

These assembly instructions apply for the following bed designs:

Airley, Apollo, Barossa, Canterbury, Daintree, Daylesford, Hawthorn, Kingston, Kimberley, Mansfield, Windsor, and Trundles

To assemble the bed:

These beds should all be assembled upside down. To help with this, the letter B is marked on the under side of all the pieces of timber that make up the bed including the legs.

Find no: 1 & match it to no: 1 on the other piece of timber

Match no: 2 with no: 2 & so on & so forth, taking care two make sure all the B‘s are facing upwards

Once the frame is assembled (making sure bolts aren’t fully tightened yet) bolt on the legs matching the letter A with A.

When bed is assembled and legs fitted, tighten all bolts then turn the right way up.

If bed has a bedhead, bolt that on next.

Finally, we add the slat sections. The slats come in a set of three sections. Depending on the model of bed you have purchased, the slats may be identical in which case they can go in any order, or there may be two identical with the third one slightly different: put the odd one in the middle.

There should be a slight gap between each of the three slat sections and the head and foot rail or you may experience some creaking.

If you do experience any creaking where timber meets timber, it will most likely be where one slat section is rubbing up against another, or the head (or foot rail) against the slats.  Rubbing a bar of soap where the creaking is occurring should eliminate this.

For Trundles please note: Trundle castors are attached by inserting the castor rod into the castor fitting on the Trundle frame (until it ‘clicks’ home).

Of the 6 castors provided, there are 2 ‘braked’ castors.  Please insert the 2 ’braked’ castors – one on each end on the same side of the trundle, so they can be easily accessed.

Enjoy your 100% Australian Made, Organic furniture. If you have any queries, please contact us and we will do our best to assist.

Eden, Esperance and Katherine

To assemble the bed:

Pick up one of the long rails, you will notice one end is cut square, this is the head end of the bed, place it roughly where it is to go in the room.

Read the number or  letter inside the notches & find the corresponding numbers on the shorter cross pieces. The shorter pieces are the bottom pieces. Slot the pieces together making sure the numbers face each other, this will make sure the bed is assembled as it was in the workshop with the best side of the timber visible.

If you have purchased an Esperance or Eden, you can now bolt the bed head on by putting all bolts in loosely then tighten them up.

Finally it's time to place the slats on the bed. Depending on the model you have chosen, there will be either three identical slats (in which case they can go in any order) or two identical and one odd slat (in  which case the odd one should be placed in the middle, with the other slats placed so the smooth end faces the head & foot end).

There should be a slight gap between each of the three slats at the head and foot rail or you may experience some creaking. If you do experience any creaking where timber meets timber, it will most likely be where one group of slats are rubbing up against another group of slats, or the head (or foot rail) is rubbing against the slats. Rubbing a bar of soap where the creaking is occurring should eliminate this.

Finally keep in mind that ideally, the placement of the slats should leave a gap (as specified above) between each group of slats and the head and foot rails (we recommend keeping gaps even).

Put the mattress on and relax --- you've earned it.

Enjoy your 100% Australian Made, Organic furniture. If you have any queries, please contact us and we will do our best to assist.

Maldon, Elliston, Lauriston and Richmond

To assemble the bed:

All beds are marked with a ‘B’ on the underside of the bed rails so you can easily assemble the bed the right way up. The ‘B’ is also marked on the bottom of the short legs on the foot end of the Richmond & Lauriston.

Assembly for Richmond & Lauriston is more easily done by matching the numbers on the main frame pieces – ‘1’ with ‘1’, ‘2’ with ‘2’ etc., making sure the ‘B’ is facing the floor on all three pieces of timber. Loosely do up the bolts then match the short legs ‘A’ with ‘A’ & ‘B’ with ‘B’. Once the bolts are in, tighten all bolts.

Now the long rails can be bolted to the bed head, two bolts each side (top & bottom) of each metal bracket. Once all four bolts are in, tighten them up. The slats will have numbers on to help you put them in the right position.

Assembly for Maldon & Elliston - the rails have a ‘B’ marking on the underside of each rail. You'll need someone to balance the bed head whilst you bolt the rail to it. Two bolts at each corner. One bolt top & bottom of each bracket. Once all bolts are tightened, the slats can be placed in position using the numbers on the slats.

There should be a slight gap between each of the three slats and the head and foot rail or you may experience some creaking. If you do experience any creaking where timber meets timber, it will most likely be where one group of slats are rubbing up against another group of slats, or the head (or foot rail) is rubbing against the slats. Rubbing a bar of soap where the creaking is occurring should eliminate this.

Finally, keep in mind that ideally, the placement of the slats should have a gap (as specified above) between each group of slats and the head and foot rails (we recommend keeping gaps even).

Job well done! Relax and Enjoy!

Bunks

To assemble your new bunk bed:

Please find the four corner posts marked:

  • LF (left front)
  • RF (right front)
  • LR (left rear)
  • RR (right rear)

Assembling the ends first, please match the letters/numbers of the horizontal pieces to the vertical posts, using 40mm bolts & key provided.

Once you have both ends assembled, assemble the heavier slat support beams to the end pieces using the bolts provided, making sure that the beams are the correct way up.

As you can see the beams are made of two pieces of timber - glued and nailed together. The correct way up is for the smaller piece of timber to be inset enough so the slats will drop in and sit flush.

The last step to assemble your bunk bed is to secure the slats. Of the 6 sets of slats provided, there are 2 sets that have been pre-drilled and require screwing into place using a No. 2 Phillips-head screwdriver (your screws have been supplied in the box of bolts). These 2 sets belong in the centre of both the upper & lower bed bases. They are numbered, and should be placed with the corresponding number found on the bunk bed frame. Once the centre slats are secured, place the other 4 sets of slats in position.

Enjoy your bunk bed, and sweet dreams!

Note the correct Mattress size below for your chosen Bunk Size:

Single: approx. 910 x 1900mm

Double: approx. 1370 x 1900

King Single: approx. 1070 x 2030.

The maximum height of the mattress shall not exceed the ‘Max. Mattress Mark” at 160mm down from the top of the guardrail. The mattress must be no higher than 270mm

Children under the age of six should not use the upper bed of the bunk.

Children should be discouraged from playing on the bed.

The bunk bed should be checked periodically to ensure that the guardrail, ladder and other components, are maintained in the correct position and state of repair and that all connectors are tight.

The bunk bed is not to be placed near a ceiling fan unless the distance between the closest points on the ceiling fan and bunk bed is at least 2m.

If your bunk beds cannot be flush up against the bedroom wall, then allow a clear space greater than 230mm right around the bed.

Keep the floor area around the bunk free from hard toys or sharp objects, in case of a trip or fall.

A small light left on, can help children safely out of top bunk in the night.

PLEASE NOTE: ALL Stickers on the bunk are a legal requirement of the ACCC Bunk Bed Australian Mandatory Standards and MUST NOT be removed or tampered with.

Cot

Congratulations! You are the proud owner of the healthiest baby cot currently available in Australia

100% Australian-Made with Australian Timber, Quality Handcrafted and 100% Certified Organic

Ensure this cot is safely assembled according to the instructions.

For child safety, set the cot up away from blinds and curtains cords, heaters or any electrical appliances.

Frames have been fully assembled with dowels and minimal hard drying glue which avoids any toxic outgassing.

Decorative bolts together with key have been supplied for final assembling.

To assemble match letters on the frame parts.

Loosely assemble platform base into position, followed by side panels.

Once all are in position tighten bolts; only with key provided --- do not overtighten once the bolt feels  tight.

If bolt will not screw into bush/nut, which is inserted from the undersides, use a screwdriver to turn bush/nut.

The cot was fully assembled and checked before packing.

All timbers were fine sanded, however sometimes slight ‘Furring’ of timber may occur with cots supplied raw and sanded. This can be avoided by using a natural, non-petro chemical oil followed by a gentle polish with fine polishing steel wool or 150 grit sandpaper after oil is dry. Organature® use and recommend ‘Livos’ oil. Should you not wish to use oil, a light sanding with 150 grit sandpaper will smoothen this furring.

WARNING:

To prevent falls, the mattress base of this cot should be adjusted to the lowest regulation position before child can sit.

The team at Organature wishes your baby (and you) the very best of healthy sleep

Cradle (with curtain)

Cradle Assembly Instructions – With Curtain

To assemble your new cradle:

Locate the four corner posts. These are the thick pieces of timber marked with a “B” on the base.

Two of the four posts have one additional hole for attaching the curtain pole.

Locate the five short rails.

Three of these short rails should then be screwed to  these posts with the additional holes, using the 50mm bolts provided.

Two of the above short rails have a hole in the centre of the rail. These need to be positioned towards the top of the cradle, as they will hold the curtain post.

Using the remaining two corner posts, bolt the remaining two short rails in place.

Using the 60mm bolts provided, screw the longer rails in place - joining the 2 ends together.

Finally, attach the remaining longest and shortest pieces together to form an upside down ‘L’ and then attach the long piece to the remaining holes to form the cradle pole.

Adding the curtain:

(Please be gentle with the curtain)

Hold the muslin curtain with the ties at the top.  Slide your fingers up inside the fold of the curtain on the side (not the sewn top) to find the top inside corner.

Taking care not to break the stitching, gently find the gap created and insert the small end of the pole into this space.  Gently work the curtain on until it reaches the closed end.

Tie the tie to keep the curtain from slipping off and tie the tie at the other end around the long upright pole so secure the curtain in place.

Gently drape the curtain.

Enjoy your cradle, and may your little one have sweet dreams!
