Futon Mattress - 100% Organic Cotton - Australian Made

Important Mattress Information

Pure Materials & No Chemical Treatments

Organature mattresses and futons are made without polyurethane foam, formaldehyde, chemical fire retardants, polyester, synthetic fibres, moth-proofing or anti-dustmite chemicals, Ultra Fresh treatments or other petrochemical additives.

We use 100% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton and carefully select materials to provide a naturally breathable mattress without the synthetic foams, fabrics and chemical treatments commonly found in conventional mattresses.

Our mattresses are designed to provide a clean, comfortable sleeping environment, particularly for babies and children where minimising unnecessary chemical exposure is important.

With proper care, an Organature mattress can provide many years of service. They are also highly reusable and more than 99% compostable and recyclable.

Water Resistance & Mattress Protection

Our mattresses and futons are not waterproof. Waterproofing generally requires a plasticised or chemical barrier, which is not consistent with our approach to natural, breathable materials.

Instead, we recommend creating a protective, water-resistant sleep surface by layering your mattress with our certified organic protectors and pads.

For maximum protection, we recommend:

  1. Mattress underlay on a hardwood slat base.
  2. Organic mattress protector directly over the mattress.
  3. Organic fleece mattress overlay, with the fleecy side facing up.
  4. For additional protection—particularly for babies, young children or anyone concerned about soiling—place an organic mattress protector pad over the sleeping area.
  5. Finish with a fitted sheet.

This layered approach provides excellent natural protection while allowing the mattress to remain breathable.

Care, Airflow & Mattress Support

A mattress needs to breathe. Never place an Organature mattress directly on the floor, as restricted airflow can contribute to moisture and mould. Our mattresses should be supported by a suitable hardwood slat base that allows continuous air circulation.

We recommend airing the mattress for at least two hours each day after use and leaving it uncovered for a full day once a week to allow thorough airing.

Our innerspring mattresses use a Bonnell spring unit, which requires proper support from a firm, non-flexible slat base. We recommend an Australian hardwood slat base wherever possible.

Regular airing, appropriate protection and correct support will help maximise the life of your mattress. With proper care, Organature mattresses are designed to last for many years.

Questions and Answers about Mattress Manufacture

Questions & Answers About Organature Mattresses

We put a great deal of thought into every aspect of our mattress construction. Our aim is simple: to create comfortable, breathable mattresses using carefully selected materials, without the synthetic foams and chemical treatments commonly found in conventional mattresses.

Here are some of the questions we are most often asked.

Why does Organature use certified organic cotton?

Many conventional mattresses use synthetic foams, polyester, adhesives and chemical treatments as part of their construction. These materials can include polyurethane foam, memory foam, synthetic fabrics and chemical treatments used for stain resistance, fire resistance or other performance characteristics.

Organature takes a different approach.

Our mattresses use 100% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton fabrics and fillings, without polyurethane foam, polyester or chemical fire retardants. Our cotton is grown and processed to certified organic standards, without the synthetic agricultural chemicals used in conventional cotton production.

We choose organic cotton because it is a natural, breathable fibre and because we want to minimise unnecessary chemical treatments in the materials surrounding you while you sleep.

Why don't Organature mattresses use latex or wool?

Our preference is for 100% certified organic cotton, rather than foam-based materials.

Latex can be a natural material, but we believe certification is important. Unless latex is appropriately certified, there is no assurance about how the raw material has been grown or processed. Organature therefore does not use latex in our mattresses.

We also choose not to use wool. Wool is a natural fibre, but it can absorb moisture and some people are sensitive or allergic to it. Organature has chosen to focus exclusively on certified organic cotton for our mattress fillings.

Our approach is deliberately simple: pure organic cotton, carefully constructed and free from unnecessary synthetic materials and chemical treatments.

What about moisture and mould?

A mattress needs to be able to breathe.

During sleep, our bodies naturally release moisture. Good airflow helps that moisture disperse and the mattress dry. This is one reason we recommend using an appropriate slatted bed base rather than placing a mattress directly on the floor.

We recommend:

  • Never placing your mattress directly on the floor.

  • Using a suitable hardwood slat base that allows airflow underneath the mattress.

  • Airing the mattress for at least two hours after use each day.

  • Leaving the mattress uncovered for a full day once a week where practical.

  • Using an appropriate mattress protector and overlay to protect the mattress from spills and moisture.

If you notice condensation or dampness in your bedroom, particularly on windows in the morning, this can be a sign that there is a high level of moisture in the room. Good ventilation and airflow around the bed can help reduce the risk of moisture accumulating.

Why is the correct bed base important?

Our innerspring mattresses use a traditional Bonnell spring unit. This type of spring requires proper support and should be used on a firm, non-flexible slatted base.

We recommend an Australian hardwood slat base wherever possible. This provides the firm support the spring unit requires while also allowing airflow underneath the mattress.

Organature's Australian hardwood bed bases are designed to complement our mattresses and are manufactured in Australia.

Why doesn't Organature use pocket springs?

Pocket springs are individually enclosed in fabric pockets, which are commonly made from polyester.

Because Organature deliberately avoids synthetic materials such as polyester in our mattress construction, we do not use pocket spring systems.

Instead, our innerspring mattresses use a traditional Bonnell spring unit, with the springs connected to provide consistent support across the mattress.

Bonnell Spring Specifications

Our standard Bonnell spring unit has a spring height of up to 15 cm, while our low-profile cot mattress spring unit is 10 cm high.

The spring units used in our different mattress sizes are:

Mattress Size Spring Rows Mattress Size Total Coils
Single 9 × 24 89 × 185.5 cm 216
Double 14 × 24 135 × 185.5 cm 336
Queen 15 × 26 150 × 201 cm 390
King 18 × 26 180 × 201 cm 468
King Single 11 × 26 104 × 201 cm 286
Single Long 9 × 26 89 × 201 cm 234
Cot 7 × 17 104 × 185.5 cm 119

Our innerspring mattresses also have additional edge-support springs. However, the mattress edge should not be used routinely as a seat, as this can eventually compromise the cotton layers.

In summary

We believe a good mattress should be comfortable, breathable and made from materials you can understand.

That's why Organature mattresses are deliberately simple: certified organic cotton, carefully selected components and no unnecessary synthetic foams, polyester or chemical treatments.

Mattress Handling & Care

How to layer the mattress for maximum protection:

We recommend our mattress underlay on a slat base, our  mattress protector on the mattress first, then place the fleece mattress overlay with the fleecy side facing up, on next.

If you would like more protection for the mattress – which is a great idea especially for babies or if you are concerned about other potential soiling – we suggest putting a mattress protector pad in sleeping positions, then finishing with a fitted sheet.

Health and Safety Recommendations:

Mattresses should never be placed directly on to the floor. They need to breathe to avoid mould growth, common with conventional mattresses.

Our pure 100% Organic cotton is a natural product that has airflow as it is a breathing product. This in turn allows your body to breathe and naturally rejuvenate itself from the toxins picked up from the environment during the day, releasing them while you sleep, which is just one of the many benefits of the Organature mattress.

It is for this reason also that we recommend the mattress be supported by a hardwood slat bed base. These allow the mattress to get continual air flow and assist your immune system even more. See our excellent range of non toxic Hardwood Bed Bases.

Futon Mattress – 100% Certified Organic Cotton

A traditional, firm futon made entirely from GOTS Certified Organic Cotton.

Our 100% Organic Cotton Futon is made from pure, carded organic cotton — both the outer fabric and the filling.

It is a deliberately simple mattress, with no synthetic foam, polyester, wool, latex or chemical treatments.

Made in Australia by Organature

Important: Please read before ordering

This is a traditional natural-fibre futon and is very firm.

It is not designed to feel like a conventional foam, memory-foam or soft mattress.

When new, the carded cotton filling gives the futon a soft, lofty appearance. With use, the cotton naturally compresses under body weight and the sleeping surface becomes firmer and flatter.

This is a normal characteristic of a natural cotton futon — it is not a fault or a sign that the mattress has failed.

A 100% cotton futon may not be suitable if:

  • you prefer a soft or plush mattress
  • you are a side sleeper who needs significant pressure relief
  • you are expecting a mattress with bounce or spring
  • you want a mattress that can be easily folded or rolled
  • you don't want to regularly turn and air your mattress
  • you are looking for a cheaper alternative to a conventional mattress

If you have never slept on a 100% natural-fibre futon before, we strongly recommend contacting us before ordering. We're happy to explain what to expect and help you decide whether it is suitable for you.

What's inside?

There is no complicated construction hidden inside this futon.

It is made from:

  • 100% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton fabric
  • 100% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton filling
  • Natural cotton tufting to hold the filling securely in place during manufacture (these tufting threads are not designed to be permanent so don't be concerned if they break or fall out over time)

There is:

  • no polyurethane foam
  • no memory foam
  • no latex
  • no polyester
  • no wool
  • no chemical fire retardants
  • no waterproof coating
  • no moth-proofing
  • no anti-dustmite chemical treatment
  • no Ultra Fresh treatment

We choose certified organic cotton because it provides a natural, breathable sleeping surface without the synthetic foams and treatments commonly used in conventional mattresses.

Available standard sizes

Single: approximately 910 × 1900 mm

King Single: approximately 1070 × 2030 mm

Height when new: approximately 15 cm, with some natural variation due to the loft of the cotton and tufting.

The side walls are approximately 15–17 cm.

Because cotton is a natural fibre, dimensions and height can change slightly as the filling settles with use.

What makes a natural cotton futon different?

A 100% cotton futon behaves very differently from a conventional mattress.

Cotton is a natural fibre rather than a foam. It does not have the same spring-back or resilience as latex, memory foam or polyurethane foam.

When the futon is new, the cotton is carded — or fluffed — to create its initial loft.

As you sleep on it, your body weight gradually compresses the cotton.

The result is a changing mattress.

It will generally:

Start: lofty and softer

↓

With use: gradually compress

↓

Over time: become flatter and firmer

This is one of the defining characteristics of a traditional cotton futon.

Is a 100% cotton futon right for you?

Our cotton futons were originally developed for babies, children and teenagers, as well as adults who specifically prefer a firm, natural sleeping surface.

They can be an excellent choice for people who:

  • prefer a firm mattress
  • like the feel of natural cotton
  • want to avoid synthetic foam
  • want a breathable mattress made from a simple range of materials
  • are happy to maintain and air their mattress
  • appreciate the changing character of natural materials

What about adults?

Adults place considerably more body weight on a mattress than children, so the cotton will compress more quickly and significantly.

For this reason, our 100% cotton futons are particularly firm for adults.

If you are an adult who wants the natural construction of a cotton futon but would prefer greater resilience and a little more cushioning, you may wish to consider our Organic Cotton & Organic Latex Futon instead.

If you are unsure which is right for you, please contact us before ordering.

Care & maintenance

A natural cotton futon requires more care than a conventional mattress.

This is important.

1. Use a proper slatted base

Never place your futon directly on the floor.

Moisture is naturally released by our bodies while we sleep. A solid surface underneath the mattress restricts airflow and can allow moisture to accumulate.

We strongly recommend a firm hardwood slat bed base that allows continuous airflow underneath the futon.

The slats should provide adequate support without excessive flex.

2. Turn your futon regularly

A 100% cotton futon should be turned regularly and used on both sides.

Turning helps distribute compression and wear more evenly throughout the cotton filling.

Don't wait until one sleeping area has become noticeably compressed before turning it.

3. Air your futon

Good airflow is essential.

Where practical, we recommend:

  • airing the futon for at least two hours each day after use

  • leaving it uncovered for a full day occasionally

  • allowing air to circulate around the mattress

  • airing it outdoors occasionally when weather permits

If your bedroom has high humidity or condensation, paying particular attention to ventilation and mattress airflow is important.

Protecting your futon

Our mattresses and futons are not waterproof.

We deliberately do not use plasticised waterproof barriers because they interfere with the breathable, natural construction of the mattress.

Instead, we recommend layering your bed to provide practical protection:

Our recommended arrangement

1. Mattress underlay
On a suitable hardwood slat base.

2. Organic mattress protector
Directly over the futon.

3. Organic fleece mattress overlay
Fleecy side facing upwards.

4. Mattress protector pad
Particularly useful for babies, young children or anyone concerned about spills and soiling.

5. Fitted sheet

This provides a comfortable, breathable sleeping surface while helping protect the cotton mattress from everyday moisture and soiling.

For babies and young children

Accidents happen.

Because our natural protectors are not plastic-coated or waterproof, additional protection may be appropriate.

We recommend using washable mattress protector pads and checking them regularly so that any moisture or soiling is dealt with promptly.

Why certified organic cotton?

There is a big difference between something being described as natural, organic and certified organic.

Our cotton is GOTS Certified Organic.

We use certified organic cotton fabrics and fillings because we want the materials surrounding you while you sleep to meet recognised organic standards, from the cultivation of the cotton through to its processing.

Our approach is deliberately simple:

Organic cotton. Careful construction. No unnecessary synthetic materials or chemical treatments.

What we don't use

Organature cotton futons are made without:

  • polyurethane foam

  • memory foam

  • polyester or other synthetic fibres

  • latex

  • wool

  • chemical fire retardants

  • waterproof plasticised barriers

  • moth-proofing treatments

  • anti-dustmite chemicals

  • Ultra Fresh treatments

  • unnecessary petrochemical additives

We don't add materials simply to make the mattress behave like a conventional foam mattress.

The natural characteristics of the cotton are part of the product.

Why doesn't this futon contain latex?

This futon is deliberately made from 100% organic cotton.

We also make a separate Organic Cotton & Organic Latex Futon for customers who want the natural cotton construction but would prefer the additional resilience provided by an organic latex core.

If you are deciding between the two, we're happy to talk you through the differences.

Don't buy this futon for the wrong reason

A natural cotton futon is quite different from a conventional mattress.

Please don't choose it simply because:

"It's trendy."

A traditional cotton futon has a very specific feel and requires regular care.

"It will be lightweight and easy to fold."

Our futons are substantial mattresses. They are not designed to behave like the thin, foldable futons often associated with the word "futon".

"It's a cheaper version of an organic mattress."

It isn't.

A cotton futon and an organic cotton innerspring mattress are two completely different types of mattress, with different constructions and different sleeping characteristics.

Choose a cotton futon because you want the feel and characteristics of a natural, firm cotton mattress.

Made in Australia

Our futons are made in Australia by Organature using certified organic cotton fabrics and fillings.

We take care to control the materials and processes used in the manufacture, handling and packaging of our mattresses.

Each futon is packed for protection during transport and delivery.

Important information about returns

Under the applicable Health Act provisions, mattresses, futons, underlays, quilts, bed toppers and pillow protectors are non-refundable unless faulty.

For this reason, please make sure you have read the information above before ordering.

If you are unsure whether a 100% cotton futon is suitable for you, please contact us first. We would much rather help you choose the right mattress before you order.
