Important Mattress Information

Pure Materials & No Chemical Treatments

Organature mattresses and futons are made without polyurethane foam, formaldehyde, chemical fire retardants, polyester, synthetic fibres, moth-proofing or anti-dustmite chemicals, Ultra Fresh treatments or other petrochemical additives.

We use 100% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton and carefully select materials to provide a naturally breathable mattress without the synthetic foams, fabrics and chemical treatments commonly found in conventional mattresses.

Our mattresses are designed to provide a clean, comfortable sleeping environment, particularly for babies and children where minimising unnecessary chemical exposure is important.

With proper care, an Organature mattress can provide many years of service. They are also highly reusable and more than 99% compostable and recyclable.

Water Resistance & Mattress Protection

Our mattresses and futons are not waterproof. Waterproofing generally requires a plasticised or chemical barrier, which is not consistent with our approach to natural, breathable materials.

Instead, we recommend creating a protective, water-resistant sleep surface by layering your mattress with our certified organic protectors and pads.

For maximum protection, we recommend:

  1. Mattress underlay on a hardwood slat base.
  2. Organic mattress protector directly over the mattress.
  3. Organic fleece mattress overlay, with the fleecy side facing up.
  4. For additional protection—particularly for babies, young children or anyone concerned about soiling—place an organic mattress protector pad over the sleeping area.
  5. Finish with a fitted sheet.

This layered approach provides excellent natural protection while allowing the mattress to remain breathable.

Care, Airflow & Mattress Support

A mattress needs to breathe. Never place an Organature mattress directly on the floor, as restricted airflow can contribute to moisture and mould. Our mattresses should be supported by a suitable hardwood slat base that allows continuous air circulation.

We recommend airing the mattress for at least two hours each day after use and leaving it uncovered for a full day once a week to allow thorough airing.

Our innerspring mattresses use a Bonnell spring unit, which requires proper support from a firm, non-flexible slat base. We recommend an Australian hardwood slat base wherever possible.

Regular airing, appropriate protection and correct support will help maximise the life of your mattress. With proper care, Organature mattresses are designed to last for many years.

Questions and Answers about Mattress Manufacture

Questions & Answers About Organature Mattresses

We put a great deal of thought into every aspect of our mattress construction. Our aim is simple: to create comfortable, breathable mattresses using carefully selected materials, without the synthetic foams and chemical treatments commonly found in conventional mattresses.

Here are some of the questions we are most often asked.

Why does Organature use certified organic cotton?

Many conventional mattresses use synthetic foams, polyester, adhesives and chemical treatments as part of their construction. These materials can include polyurethane foam, memory foam, synthetic fabrics and chemical treatments used for stain resistance, fire resistance or other performance characteristics.

Organature takes a different approach.

Our mattresses use 100% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton fabrics and fillings, without polyurethane foam, polyester or chemical fire retardants. Our cotton is grown and processed to certified organic standards, without the synthetic agricultural chemicals used in conventional cotton production.

We choose organic cotton because it is a natural, breathable fibre and because we want to minimise unnecessary chemical treatments in the materials surrounding you while you sleep.

Why don't Organature mattresses use latex or wool?

Our preference is for 100% certified organic cotton, rather than foam-based materials.

Latex can be a natural material, but we believe certification is important. Unless latex is appropriately certified, there is no assurance about how the raw material has been grown or processed. Organature therefore does not use latex in our mattresses.

We also choose not to use wool. Wool is a natural fibre, but it can absorb moisture and some people are sensitive or allergic to it. Organature has chosen to focus exclusively on certified organic cotton for our mattress fillings.

Our approach is deliberately simple: pure organic cotton, carefully constructed and free from unnecessary synthetic materials and chemical treatments.

What about moisture and mould?

A mattress needs to be able to breathe.

During sleep, our bodies naturally release moisture. Good airflow helps that moisture disperse and the mattress dry. This is one reason we recommend using an appropriate slatted bed base rather than placing a mattress directly on the floor.

We recommend:

  • Never placing your mattress directly on the floor.

  • Using a suitable hardwood slat base that allows airflow underneath the mattress.

  • Airing the mattress for at least two hours after use each day.

  • Leaving the mattress uncovered for a full day once a week where practical.

  • Using an appropriate mattress protector and overlay to protect the mattress from spills and moisture.

If you notice condensation or dampness in your bedroom, particularly on windows in the morning, this can be a sign that there is a high level of moisture in the room. Good ventilation and airflow around the bed can help reduce the risk of moisture accumulating.

Why is the correct bed base important?

Our innerspring mattresses use a traditional Bonnell spring unit. This type of spring requires proper support and should be used on a firm, non-flexible slatted base.

We recommend an Australian hardwood slat base wherever possible. This provides the firm support the spring unit requires while also allowing airflow underneath the mattress.

Organature's Australian hardwood bed bases are designed to complement our mattresses and are manufactured in Australia.

Why doesn't Organature use pocket springs?

Pocket springs are individually enclosed in fabric pockets, which are commonly made from polyester.

Because Organature deliberately avoids synthetic materials such as polyester in our mattress construction, we do not use pocket spring systems.

Instead, our innerspring mattresses use a traditional Bonnell spring unit, with the springs connected to provide consistent support across the mattress.

Bonnell Spring Specifications

Our standard Bonnell spring unit has a spring height of up to 15 cm, while our low-profile cot mattress spring unit is 10 cm high.

The spring units used in our different mattress sizes are:

Mattress Size Spring Rows Mattress Size Total Coils
Single 9 × 24 89 × 185.5 cm 216
Double 14 × 24 135 × 185.5 cm 336
Queen 15 × 26 150 × 201 cm 390
King 18 × 26 180 × 201 cm 468
King Single 11 × 26 104 × 201 cm 286
Single Long 9 × 26 89 × 201 cm 234
Cot 7 × 17 104 × 185.5 cm 119

Our innerspring mattresses also have additional edge-support springs. However, the mattress edge should not be used routinely as a seat, as this can eventually compromise the cotton layers.

In summary

We believe a good mattress should be comfortable, breathable and made from materials you can understand.

That's why Organature mattresses are deliberately simple: certified organic cotton, carefully selected components and no unnecessary synthetic foams, polyester or chemical treatments.

Mattress Handling & Care

How to layer the mattress for maximum protection:

We recommend our mattress underlay on a slat base, our  mattress protector on the mattress first, then place the fleece mattress overlay with the fleecy side facing up, on next.

If you would like more protection for the mattress – which is a great idea especially for babies or if you are concerned about other potential soiling – we suggest putting a mattress protector pad in sleeping positions, then finishing with a fitted sheet.

Health and Safety Recommendations:

Mattresses should never be placed directly on to the floor. They need to breathe to avoid mould growth, common with conventional mattresses.

Our pure 100% Organic cotton is a natural product that has airflow as it is a breathing product. This in turn allows your body to breathe and naturally rejuvenate itself from the toxins picked up from the environment during the day, releasing them while you sleep, which is just one of the many benefits of the Organature mattress.

It is for this reason also that we recommend the mattress be supported by a hardwood slat bed base. These allow the mattress to get continual air flow and assist your immune system even more. See our excellent range of non toxic Hardwood Bed Bases.

Our NEW Futon Mattress – Organic Cotton with Organic Latex. A naturally firm futon made from certified organic cotton with a 5 cm GOLS-certified organic latex core.

Our Organic Cotton & Organic Latex Futon combines the traditional feel of a natural cotton futon with the added resilience of a certified organic latex core.

The result is a firm, breathable mattress with a little more give and resilience than our 100% organic cotton futon, while avoiding polyurethane foam, memory foam, polyester and conventional synthetic materials.

Made in Australia by Organature

Important: Please read before ordering

This is a natural-fibre futon, not a conventional soft mattress.

If you have never used a futon and are used to a conventional mattress containing foam or memory foam, our futon may feel considerably firmer.

The cotton filling is carded (fluffed) during manufacture, giving the futon its soft, lofted appearance. With use, the cotton naturally compresses and the sleeping surface becomes firmer. The tufting threads are added during the manufacture process to keep the carded cotton in place until the layers have compressed with use. These threads are not designed to be permanent so do not be concerned if they break or fall out.

The organic latex core provides some resilience and helps prevent the futon from feeling as hard as a 100% cotton futon, but this is still a firm mattress.

A futon may not be suitable if:

  • you prefer a soft or plush mattress
  • you are a side sleeper who needs a softer, pressure-relieving surface
  • you are looking for a mattress that can simply be placed on the floor
  • you don't want to regularly air and rotate your mattress
  • you are expecting it to behave like a conventional foam or memory-foam mattress

If you have never slept on a natural cotton futon before, we strongly recommend contacting us before ordering. We're happy to talk through whether it is likely to suit you.

What's inside?

Our Double, Queen and King futons contain:

  • 100% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton fabric and filling
  • 5 cm GOLS-certified Organic Latex centre core
  • Natural cotton tufting to hold the filling securely in place

The latex core is surrounded by a substantial amount of organic cotton, creating a breathable mattress with greater resilience than our 100% cotton futons.

Available sizes

Size Approximate mattress size
Double 1370 × 1900 mm
Queen 1520 × 2030 mm
King 1830 × 2030 mm

Approximate height when new: 15cm, with some variation due to the natural loft and tufting.

The side walls are approximately 15–17cm.

Single and King Single

Single and King Single futons continue to be made from 100% certified organic cotton without the latex core.

Why did we develop this futon?

Our original futons were made entirely from carded organic cotton.

We love the simplicity of a 100% cotton mattress, but cotton behaves differently from foam or latex. It has no memory and doesn't spring back after compression. Over time, the cotton settles and the mattress becomes firmer.

Some adult customers wanted the natural construction of our cotton futon but preferred a little more resilience.

That's why we developed this version using a 5 cm GOLS-certified organic latex core surrounded by organic cotton.

It retains the firm, natural character of a futon while providing greater resilience and a slightly softer feel for adults.

What should you expect from a natural futon?

The loft will change

When new, the carded cotton filling gives the futon a naturally irregular, lofty appearance.

This is normal.

As you sleep on it, the cotton compresses under your body weight. The surface will gradually become flatter and firmer.

This is not a fault or loss of filling. It is a natural characteristic of cotton.

It won't feel like a foam mattress

Natural cotton and latex behave differently from polyurethane foam and memory foam.

Our futon has a firm, supportive feel rather than the sinking or enveloping sensation associated with conventional foam mattresses.

Why choose Organature?

Our mattresses are made without:

  • polyurethane foam
  • memory foam
  • polyester or other synthetic fibres
  • formaldehyde
  • chemical fire retardants
  • waterproof plastic barriers
  • moth-proofing treatments
  • anti-dustmite chemical treatments
  • Ultra Fresh treatments
  • unnecessary petrochemical additives

We use 100% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton in our cotton fabrics and fillings.

Our aim is to keep the construction as simple and transparent as possible, using materials that you can understand.

About the Organic Latex

The latex used in this futon is GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certified Dunlop latex.

Latex cannot be made from rubber latex alone. Small amounts of processing ingredients are required to turn the liquid latex into a stable, durable foam.

GOLS certification sets limits on these ingredients and provides requirements for the organic sourcing and processing of the latex.

The latex is washed thoroughly during manufacture and baked to remove moisture.

We chose certified organic latex because certification gives us greater assurance about the material's organic origin and processing.

Care & maintenance

A natural futon needs airflow

Never place your futon directly on the floor.

Moisture is naturally released by our bodies while we sleep. Without adequate airflow underneath and around the mattress, moisture can accumulate and create conditions that encourage mould.

We strongly recommend using a firm hardwood slat bed base that allows continuous airflow beneath the mattress.

Also avoid positioning the mattress tightly against walls, curtains or solid bedheads where airflow is restricted.

Rotate regularly

The Organic Cotton & Organic Latex Futon should be rotated regularly so that wear is distributed evenly.

Unlike our 100% cotton futons, this model does not need to be flipped over.

Air your futon

Where practical:

  • air the futon for at least two hours after use
  • leave it uncovered for a full day occasionally
  • allow fresh air to circulate around all sides
  • air it outdoors occasionally when weather permits

Good airflow is one of the most important things you can do to prolong the life of a natural mattress.

Protecting your futon

Our mattresses and futons are not waterproof.

We deliberately avoid waterproof plastic or chemical barriers because they compromise the breathable construction of the mattress.

For the best protection, we recommend layering your bed as follows:

  1. Mattress underlay on a suitable hardwood slat base
  2. Organic mattress protector directly over the futon
  3. Organic fleece mattress overlay, fleecy side up
  4. Mattress protector pad over the sleeping area where additional protection is required
  5. Fitted sheet

This provides a practical level of protection from perspiration, spills and everyday soiling while allowing the mattress to remain breathable.

For babies and young children, we recommend using additional mattress protector pads and checking them regularly.

Is this futon right for you?

Our futons were originally developed for babies, children, teenagers and people looking for a mattress made without the synthetic foams and chemical treatments commonly found in conventional mattresses.

The Organic Cotton & Organic Latex version was developed specifically to give adults a little more resilience while retaining the natural character of a traditional cotton futon.

A futon is a good choice if you:

  • prefer a firm sleeping surface
  • like natural fibres and breathable materials
  • want to avoid polyurethane and memory foam
  • don't want an innerspring or pocket-spring mattress
  • are prepared to care for and regularly air your mattress
  • appreciate the changing character of natural cotton

If you prefer a softer mattress, sleep primarily on your side, or don't want the additional care required by a natural futon, one of our other mattress designs may be a better choice.

If you're unsure, please contact us before ordering. We're very happy to help you choose.

Still unsure?

We would much rather answer your questions before you order than have you receive a mattress that isn't right for you.

Please contact us if you'd like to discuss firmness, materials, bed bases, sizing or whether this futon is suitable for your sleeping needs.
