Sprung Futon Mattress for the Hardwood Sofa Bed

Important Mattress Information

Pure Materials & No Chemical Treatments

Organature mattresses and futons are made without polyurethane foam, formaldehyde, chemical fire retardants, polyester, synthetic fibres, moth-proofing or anti-dustmite chemicals, Ultra Fresh treatments or other petrochemical additives.

We use 100% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton and carefully select materials to provide a naturally breathable mattress without the synthetic foams, fabrics and chemical treatments commonly found in conventional mattresses.

Our mattresses are designed to provide a clean, comfortable sleeping environment, particularly for babies and children where minimising unnecessary chemical exposure is important.

With proper care, an Organature mattress can provide many years of service. They are also highly reusable and more than 99% compostable and recyclable.

Water Resistance & Mattress Protection

Our mattresses and futons are not waterproof. Waterproofing generally requires a plasticised or chemical barrier, which is not consistent with our approach to natural, breathable materials.

Instead, we recommend creating a protective, water-resistant sleep surface by layering your mattress with our certified organic protectors and pads.

For maximum protection, we recommend:

  1. Mattress underlay on a hardwood slat base.
  2. Organic mattress protector directly over the mattress.
  3. Organic fleece mattress overlay, with the fleecy side facing up.
  4. For additional protection—particularly for babies, young children or anyone concerned about soiling—place an organic mattress protector pad over the sleeping area.
  5. Finish with a fitted sheet.

This layered approach provides excellent natural protection while allowing the mattress to remain breathable.

Care, Airflow & Mattress Support

A mattress needs to breathe. Never place an Organature mattress directly on the floor, as restricted airflow can contribute to moisture and mould. Our mattresses should be supported by a suitable hardwood slat base that allows continuous air circulation.

We recommend airing the mattress for at least two hours each day after use and leaving it uncovered for a full day once a week to allow thorough airing.

Our innerspring mattresses use a Bonnell spring unit, which requires proper support from a firm, non-flexible slat base. We recommend an Australian hardwood slat base wherever possible.

Regular airing, appropriate protection and correct support will help maximise the life of your mattress. With proper care, Organature mattresses are designed to last for many years.

Questions and Answers about Mattress Manufacture

Questions & Answers About Organature Mattresses

We put a great deal of thought into every aspect of our mattress construction. Our aim is simple: to create comfortable, breathable mattresses using carefully selected materials, without the synthetic foams and chemical treatments commonly found in conventional mattresses.

Here are some of the questions we are most often asked.

Why does Organature use certified organic cotton?

Many conventional mattresses use synthetic foams, polyester, adhesives and chemical treatments as part of their construction. These materials can include polyurethane foam, memory foam, synthetic fabrics and chemical treatments used for stain resistance, fire resistance or other performance characteristics.

Organature takes a different approach.

Our mattresses use 100% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton fabrics and fillings, without polyurethane foam, polyester or chemical fire retardants. Our cotton is grown and processed to certified organic standards, without the synthetic agricultural chemicals used in conventional cotton production.

We choose organic cotton because it is a natural, breathable fibre and because we want to minimise unnecessary chemical treatments in the materials surrounding you while you sleep.

Why don't Organature mattresses use latex or wool?

Our preference is for 100% certified organic cotton, rather than foam-based materials.

Latex can be a natural material, but we believe certification is important. Unless latex is appropriately certified, there is no assurance about how the raw material has been grown or processed. Organature therefore does not use latex in our mattresses.

We also choose not to use wool. Wool is a natural fibre, but it can absorb moisture and some people are sensitive or allergic to it. Organature has chosen to focus exclusively on certified organic cotton for our mattress fillings.

Our approach is deliberately simple: pure organic cotton, carefully constructed and free from unnecessary synthetic materials and chemical treatments.

What about moisture and mould?

A mattress needs to be able to breathe.

During sleep, our bodies naturally release moisture. Good airflow helps that moisture disperse and the mattress dry. This is one reason we recommend using an appropriate slatted bed base rather than placing a mattress directly on the floor.

We recommend:

  • Never placing your mattress directly on the floor.

  • Using a suitable hardwood slat base that allows airflow underneath the mattress.

  • Airing the mattress for at least two hours after use each day.

  • Leaving the mattress uncovered for a full day once a week where practical.

  • Using an appropriate mattress protector and overlay to protect the mattress from spills and moisture.

If you notice condensation or dampness in your bedroom, particularly on windows in the morning, this can be a sign that there is a high level of moisture in the room. Good ventilation and airflow around the bed can help reduce the risk of moisture accumulating.

Why is the correct bed base important?

Our innerspring mattresses use a traditional Bonnell spring unit. This type of spring requires proper support and should be used on a firm, non-flexible slatted base.

We recommend an Australian hardwood slat base wherever possible. This provides the firm support the spring unit requires while also allowing airflow underneath the mattress.

Organature's Australian hardwood bed bases are designed to complement our mattresses and are manufactured in Australia.

Why doesn't Organature use pocket springs?

Pocket springs are individually enclosed in fabric pockets, which are commonly made from polyester.

Because Organature deliberately avoids synthetic materials such as polyester in our mattress construction, we do not use pocket spring systems.

Instead, our innerspring mattresses use a traditional Bonnell spring unit, with the springs connected to provide consistent support across the mattress.

Bonnell Spring Specifications

Our standard Bonnell spring unit has a spring height of up to 15 cm, while our low-profile cot mattress spring unit is 10 cm high.

The spring units used in our different mattress sizes are:

Mattress Size Spring Rows Mattress Size Total Coils
Single 9 × 24 89 × 185.5 cm 216
Double 14 × 24 135 × 185.5 cm 336
Queen 15 × 26 150 × 201 cm 390
King 18 × 26 180 × 201 cm 468
King Single 11 × 26 104 × 201 cm 286
Single Long 9 × 26 89 × 201 cm 234
Cot 7 × 17 104 × 185.5 cm 119

Our innerspring mattresses also have additional edge-support springs. However, the mattress edge should not be used routinely as a seat, as this can eventually compromise the cotton layers.

In summary

We believe a good mattress should be comfortable, breathable and made from materials you can understand.

That's why Organature mattresses are deliberately simple: certified organic cotton, carefully selected components and no unnecessary synthetic foams, polyester or chemical treatments.

Mattress Handling & Care

How to layer the mattress for maximum protection:

We recommend our mattress underlay on a slat base, our  mattress protectoron the mattress first, then place the fleece mattress overlay with the fleecy side facing up, on next.

If you would like more protection for the mattress – which is a great idea especially for babies or if you are concerned about other potential soiling – we suggest putting a mattress protector pad in sleeping positions, then finishing with a fitted sheet.

Health and Safety Recommendations:

Mattresses should never be placed directly on to the floor. They need to breathe to avoid mould growth, common with conventional mattresses.

Our pure 100% Organic cotton is a natural product that has airflow as it is a breathing product. This in turn allows your body to breathe and naturally rejuvenate itself from the toxins picked up from the environment during the day, releasing them while you sleep, which is just one of the many benefits of the Organature mattress.

It is for this reason also that we recommend the mattress be supported by a hardwood slat bed base. These allow the mattress to get continual air flow and assist your immune system even more. See our excellent range of non toxic Hardwood Bed Bases.

The super comfortable sprung futon mattress on our sofa bed was designed by our founder Peter for people who do not want to live with chemicals, who have asthma, eczema, allergies or other chemical sensitivities.

It is made without binding so that the edges are not digging into legs. The seat and back both contain low profile spring units which when combined together in one casing act as both a couch and a bed.

Each spring unit is in a bag made from our pure 100% Organic cotton and is placed tight around the springs so that the carded pure 100% Organic cotton does not fall between the springs. This is followed by several layers pure 100% Organic cotton and finished with our pure 100% Organic cotton Flannel fabric. The combination of springs, organic fabrics and filling makes this product breathe and provides a sound, comfortable sofa bed.
