The Beauty of Organic Imperfection: Understanding Natural Unbleached Cotton

We sometimes hear from customers who are surprised to notice tiny black flecks, subtle colour variations, or an earthy scent in our organic cotton products. In a world filled with heavily processed textiles that are bleached, dyed and chemically treated to appear perfectly uniform, these natural characteristics can feel unfamiliar at first.

But these “imperfections” are actually something very special.

They are signs that your fabric is real, minimally processed, and as close to nature as possible.

What Are the Black Flecks in Organic Cotton?

Those tiny black or brown flecks you may notice in unbleached organic cotton are naturally occurring remnants from the cotton plant itself. They can include tiny fragments of cotton leaf, seed particles or plant matter that remain after processing.

In conventional textile manufacturing, fabrics are typically subjected to intensive bleaching and chemical treatments designed to strip away every trace of natural variation. While this creates a perfectly smooth and uniform appearance, it also removes much of the fabric’s natural character — and introduces harsh chemicals into the process.

With pure organic unbleached cotton, the goal is different.

Rather than forcing the fabric into artificial perfection, we choose to preserve the integrity of the natural fibre wherever possible. Those little flecks are a gentle reminder that the cotton came from the earth, not a chemical laboratory.

The Natural “Earthy” Smell of Organic Cotton

Another characteristic some customers notice is the subtle earthy or “natural” scent that can accompany organic cotton products when first opened.

This is completely normal.

Unlike synthetic fabrics or heavily treated conventional cotton, organic cotton is not saturated with artificial fragrances, chemical finishes, formaldehyde resins or harsh processing agents designed to mask natural odours. Instead, you are experiencing the genuine scent of natural fibres that have been minimally processed.

Most customers find this scent softens naturally after airing and sunlight, but many also come to appreciate it as part of the authenticity of truly natural bedding and fabrics.

Why We Choose Unbleached Organic Cotton

At Organature, we believe there is beauty in authenticity.

Choosing unbleached organic cotton means choosing:

  • Fewer harsh chemical treatments
  • Reduced environmental impact
  • A more breathable and natural fabric
  • A textile that retains its organic character
  • A product that celebrates nature rather than disguising it

No two pieces are ever completely identical and we see that as something worth celebrating.

A Return to Natural Living

Modern manufacturing has conditioned us to expect absolute uniformity in almost everything we buy. But nature doesn’t work that way. Every piece of timber has its own unique grain, and organic cotton carries its own unique natural markings too.

These subtle irregularities are not flaws. They are part of the story of the fibre.

They remind us that what we are sleeping on, wrapping our babies in, or bringing into our homes is something genuine, thoughtfully made, and connected to the natural world.

About the Outer Covering

These pillows are made with an organic cotton outer (un-dyed, unbleached, un-treated fabric), with a zippered end. Cotton pillow casings require a zippered opening that is closed after filling, due to machinery limitations. For safety reasons the pull tag has been removed and it is not intended as a zip which can be opened.

Packaging and Handling

How we handle our products is just as important as the products themselves.

Instead of plastic packaging or wraps, we use True Cellulose packaging, which is completely non toxic, safe for food storage and fully biodegradable.

Our staff do not wear any perfumes, lotions, sprays or other toxic body-care products and all their clothing is washed in chemical free washing powder to make sure that every aspect of our manufacturing, storage, supply, transfer and delivery process is as clean and as pure as possible.

Even the ink we use to print our invoices and price-lists is the safest we can find on the market.

Caring For Your Organature Quilt

Any quilt which is made with 100% natural fibres is normally not washable; the fabric would have been preshrunk; the filling would not have been preshrunk . Should you ever see a washable natural fibre filled quilt, it is likely to contain a certain quantity of polyester, or silicone has been applied, without disclosure on the label. Washing should not be necessary if you use a quilt cover, shake and air regularly. Spot cleaning and airing is recommended.

* Emergency only: Our quilts have been washed by some clients using a large tub and squeezing, however this is not the recommendation by Organature.

  • Do not agitate.
  • May be spun in machine by layering against drum.
  • May be tumble dried on low setting (below 30C), tumble for 10 minutes, take out, open up and back in tumble dryer for 10 minutes.
  • Repeat until completely dry.
  • We do not recommend washing

Can I wash my Organature Organic Cotton Quilt or Pillow?

We do not recommend washing.

Quilts and pillows made with 100% cotton are prone to clump and shrink if they are washed. (Conventional cotton quilts that can be washed will have a portion of polyester and/or chemicals added to make them washable). Any soiling should be removed only with a damp cloth, and bi-carb soda should be used to soak up moisture. Re-apply the bi-carb soda as necessary until the area is mostly dry, and then complete the drying process using a hair dryer, on low setting, not too close to the item and on both sides. Ensure the quilt is fully dried as moisture may allow mould to develop. Hang out to air in sunshine where possible to aid with airing. If very badly soiled you could wash it gently in cold water by squeezing the affected area, (do not use washing machine action), absorb excess wetting with towels as much as possible and hang on line. May also be put in tumble dryer on low setting, tumble for 5-10 minutes, take out, fluff out and repeat until dry.

Like ALL cotton products, organic cotton will shrink if washed or tumble dried in temperatures above 40c. We do not recommend washing.

The Natural Fragrance of Organic Cotton

The pure Organic Cotton we use in our products may retain some of the natural, earthy fragrance from it's state on the plant. We do not use any of the toxic chemicals used to cover up these natural smells.
This natural fragrance will dissipate over time, and fresh airing and sunshine will also help.

A message from our CEO

After a period of diminishing supplies we are happy to release our new version of delightfully cosy, lightweight and superior quality pure 100% Organic cotton Quilts. Our quilts are now produced on our behalf and exclusively for Organature, by our associates in India under full GOTS organic certification.

Originally our quilts were made under our control by a company in Melbourne. These were made using pure 100% Organic cotton fabric and filling and produced locally and while we would have chosen to continue to have the quilts made in Australia, the manufacturer was no longer able to continue to produce them for us.

There are several other quilt manufacturers in Australia producing non-organic quilts on their machines, but finding a company able and agreeable to the processing of our pure 100% Organic cotton for our quilts with the mandatory cleaning of machines to avoid cross contamination, proved impossible.
However, while we are no longer able to supply Australian made we are sure you will be delighted with the exceptional quality of the new super snuggly, lightweight and cosy quilts with the added benefit of the price, which is a little more economical for you.

Sleep well.
Kind regards,
Peter | CEO Organature
